The Urchin Diver

This is the story of how one man trusted his gut and took a chance. One day, after much contemplation and thought, Brian Lyne -- a carpenter, waiter and professional diver -- decided to leave his comfortable life in Washington, DC to become an urchin diver in Maine. The catalyst? A random magazine article about a new fishery in Maine that involved diving for urchins and selling them to the Japanese. It gave Brian an idea, and with that, he loaded up his Ram Charger, said good-bye to his life in DC and headed north with nothing more than a few thousand dollars in his pocket and a dream. He describes how he found his way in Maine to join a rather diverse crew of divers who spent their days in frigid waters, battling currents and surges to bring in tons of urchins worth thousands of dollars a day. He chronicles the 10 years he spent on a remote island in Maine -- with diversions to Indonesia, Costa Rica and a monastery in Boston -- giving us a rich portrait of island life, and the people who called it home. This is an intimate memoir and perhaps a wake-up call for those who have wondered, "Is there anything more?" Especially now, this memoir is relevant, thought-provoking and may lead you to do something you never knew you were capable of doing. Sometimes the time comes when you need to do what’s right for you. To be brave. To do something unknown. Let Brian's story be your inspiration.
